Thanks for this. I had read about Maimon in Amos Elon's marvelous book The Pity of it All. He impressed not only Kant but also Schiller and Goethe, who wanted Maimon to move to Weimar and join his inner circle.

Thanks Chen. I recently completed Dr. Schama's two volume "History of the Jews" and some of the points you made were touched on in his second volume but I don't think he mentioned the person in your article. Off to do research.....

That's a fair point. I once thought about Hemmingway and his travels to Paris in the 1920s. Could a female writer do the same? Leave everything in search of "a one true sentence?"
